Our Evolving Robot World

It is amazing the number of tasks robots are involved in these days to make our world run smoothly.

We have become accustomed to seeing robots help with floor cleaning and various other chores but it is amazing to see them being used to add security for some of our cities and urban facilities.

These robots can see you and talk with you but, like most any new creation, there are things that need to be improved along the way and one of these has to do with privacy.

In New York City you may see them patrolling the sidewalks using technologies used in self-driving cars.

Their appearance is much like that of commercial garbage cans that you see used to collect trash at airports, bus stations or on city streets.

There is a lot of technology encased in these robots. There are five cameras in each robot
which act as the “eyes” of the robot and the fifth is used to obtain thermal imaging data. All the information is gathered and is forwarded via the internet to the local security teams.

Some of the tasks the robots can do are, record license plates numbers, see cellphone serial numbers within certain areas and watch people as they move around on the sidewalks.

The data is secured and seen only by those charged with controlling the robot. It can be stopped and receive new instructions but it isn’t equipped with a joystick and, therefore, unable to zero in on a certain person or group and follow them.

Of course, privacy concerns abound.

Daily Dealing With the Family Cats

Wow, I am really getting a great education dealing with my two aging Siamese cats.

After being out of town a couple of days I have gotten the message loud and clear that they do not like my being away one bit!

How do I know this? Let me tell you the ways! First of all their two cat boxes were almost totally ignored and they used the entire bathroom floor where the boxes are located while almost sparing their two boxes.

I had been back home a day and a half before one of them came out to the den to say “hello”,

From this past weeks behavior of my cat family I am working on the idea that they were suffering from “separation anxiety”.

I will be adding new toys to help them stay busy and entertained the next time I am away.
Also, I will double check the cat boxes and make sure that I leave their favorite radio music playing.

We hope that these new things will help the cats relax and be comfortable while I am away. If these changes do not solve the immediate behavior problems of my cat family we will explore other avenues including a visit to the veterinarian.

Pet Benefits for the Elderly

Pet ownership has proven over and over again to benefit the elderly in many ways.

Pets help to reduce the stress of their owners as they provide companionship and company for them.

The world today is plagued with loneliness for many age groups and pets can work magic in helping people side step some of those lonely times.

Loneliness and boredom are big contributors when the elderly begin to experience failing health.

Taking care of a pet helps one feel needed and worthy. Many different species of animals make wonderful pets including rabbits, guinea pigs, miniature pigs, turtles, and birds, but, cats and dogs seem to be the most popular choices. Owning a pet provides many benefits including:

Lowered cholesterol

Reduced rates of developing heart disease

Reduced systolic blood pressure for female owners

The above results found by the Baker Medical Research Institute, Australia’s largest cardiac center.

There are many healthy pets in shelters that need good homes and companionship. Maybe a trip with an elderly person through the search pages of “rescue” sites might be the perfect match for both the elderly person and the animal.

Enjoying Halloween

Allhallowtide is the beginning of the three day observance of remembering the dead including martyrs, saints (hallows), and all the ones passed on into eternity.

It is thought that many Halloween traditions that we celebrate today began with the ancient Celtic festivals which may have had pagan roots. Some believe that these festivals became Christianized with the early church over the centuries.

Many Halloween festivals are used for raising money for school projects, athletics, scholarships or medical needs.

The many fun activities during Halloween include trick-or-treating, Halloween entertaining and celebrations, pumpkin carving and decorating, apple bobbing, bonfires, telling ghosts stories and playing pranks and watching horror movies.

Many churches all over the world, use the Halloween celebrations to attend church services to enjoy entertainment and good food in a celebratory atmosphere with friends while honoring the dead by lighting candles.

During these celebrations Halloween costumes are the dress and one of the main attractions of these events.

Halloween costumes have changed over the years from the time your mom made your costume from a sheet, paper bag or the popular crepe paper of that day.

Costumes that feature skeletons, black cats, and ghosts to comic and television characters, and, now even to politicians of the day, allow us to express ourselves fully.

Halloween is always a fun time to enjoy getting together and enjoy this beautiful time of the year.

Stress in Your Life

Stress can do almost anything and effects people differently. For instance, some eat too much and others don’t eat much at all along with many other variations and contradictions.

Ultra-stressed people tend to be angry people and are on edge with unexpected outbursts, crying, etc.

As stressed people tend to be up tight about most everything they tend to take part in harmful habits such as drinking, drugs, smoking, and overeating in the attempt to ease their painful state of being.

A continued stressful state can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

If you find yourself in this situation explore ways that you can implement to help relieve the stress. Things such as listening to music, watching a favorite TV program, a massage, yoga, regular exercise, visiting with friends and family that you enjoy, or develop a new hobby among other new experiences that can help in the healing process.

Try to employ a sense of humor to your battle with stress and realize that, with proper attention, your stressful state doesn’t have to last.

Be sure to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and get plenty of quality sleep.

A good physical examination can help to discover any small problems before they can grow into larger ones.

First Day of School

Here in my town tomorrow is the first day of the new school year.

Do you remember those first days of the new school year?

Even though I am very old at this writing I remember those first days of the school year. Particularly, do I remember the first day of the fifth grade for me.

It was very hot and no air conditioning back in those days and even getting dressed for school was miserable with the humidity and heat. A fan about the size of a pizza buzzed away redistributing the hot air as my mother helped me remove the “rag curlers” from my long blond hair.

I was in that awkward stage of not knowing whether to sit inside and visit with the adults or go outside and play with the rest of the children.

Over the summer I had grown much taller and leaner and I wanted to make “my
mark” and be remembered by all the students new and old.

I had laid out the night before a beautiful yellow linen weave dress that my aunt had handed down to me as my cousin had just outgrown it.

Since it was the first day of the school year my mother drove my sister and me to school which we considered a treat.

The entire student body of 12 grades were assembled in the auditorium and the program began with the welcome and the introduction of teachers. This took a bit of time. Then, the principal began to appoint someone from each class to come to the front.

The names were called and, suddenly, I thought I heard my name but did I really? So, I sat there a minute to be sure and, there it was again and it was really my name.

All the people that were called went down to the front and were each given a stack of papers to give to each student in his immediate class.

I just remember that particular day which made me seem important and useful as more than just a child.

Do you have a happening in your life, large or small, that marked a transition period in your growth?

Conquering Flesh-eating Bacteria

Necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by an infection including one or more bacterium. The term flesh-eating bacteria is used to describe infections caused by the bacterium known as Streptococcus pyogenes.

Washing ones hands often is a big deterant in keeping disease of any kind away.

The key to treating necrotizing fasclitis is to get a quick and correct diagnosis from your doctor as this disease can cause death.

It is important to see a doctor immediately if you have a fever, nausea or dizziness in a short time after an injury or surgery.

This is a bacterial infection of the tissue under the skin surrounding blood vessels, muscles, nerves, and fat. The bacteria usually get into the body through a cut or injury in the skin and the bacteria spread quickly to destroy the tissue they infect.
Necrotizing fasciitis can result in a loss of limbs and even death. Quick and accurate diagnosis along with rapid antibiotic treatment, and prompt surgery are mandatory to stopping this infection

Labor Day Holiday in the USA

Workers in the USA are getting ready for a short work week due to the upcoming Labor Day Holiday which is celebrated on the first Monday of September each year and is September 3 this year.

This holiday was born during one of the darkest times in the country’s labor history.

At the peak of the Industrial Revolution in the USA back in the 1880s the average workday was 12 hrs. and the work week was 7 days. This was imperative to provide the basic necessities for one’s family.

Child labor was prevalent from the ages of 5 or 6 in spite of some states having restrictions in place.

This was in the days before safe and healthy work places were mandated.

As the Industrial Revolution took hold the major employment venues were factories and occupations other than agriculture which opened the door wider to labor unions that began in the end of the 18th century.

As labor unions became more organized and they sought better working conditions, fewer hours worked and more pay for the workers all which came with tremendous turmoil.

Out of the struggles came the idea of a holiday that would honor and celebrate the workers and their accomplishments.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 when 10,000 workers took a day off with no pay to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City.

An incident at the Pullman Car Company in Chicago brought their struggles to public light when in 1894 employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company, located in Chicago, organized a strike because of wage cuts and the firing of their union representatives.

These actions led to the American Railroad Union calling for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars which, in turn, would interrupt railroad traffic nationwide. This action took place on June 26 causing unrest and riots so much so that the federal government sent troops to Chicago where 12 workers died as a result.

As a gesture of the “olive branch” to American workers Congress made Labor Day a legal holiday. es

Labor Day is celebrated in America with barbecues, picnics, parades and fireworks and as the end-of summer vacation with back-to-school on the horizon.

Adoption of the Raccoon

Years ago my family was having farmland cleared where there were lots of big trees. From the homestead we could hear the equipment humming as the procedure was taking place.

Soon my husband appeared at the door with a tiny bundle wrapped in a cloth and when he pulled back the cover there was the smallest little raccoon I had ever seen.

It turns out that one of the larger trees that had been toppled had housed a raccoon nest and the baby had tumbled out with the nest as the tree fell.

Our children were so thrilled with this cute little creature that everybody began hurrying around to find a bed for it which turned out to be a doll’s bed and then there was food that had to be located….but what food?

We decided that since this raccoon was a baby that milk was the only possibility so we began to feed the it with a tiny doll’s plastic bottle.

Since raccoons gestation period is about 65 days and the “kits”, as the babies are called, will have 3 to 5 siblings there were probably more raccoons produced on the land before it was totally cleared.

The females tend to live in their particular area in a group as do the males in their separate group until mating season.

Females home range in cities is considered to be about 7 acres to males range which is up to some 12,000 acres in the wild.

The lifespan of the raccoon in the wild is about 2-3 years while in captivity they can live up to 20 years.
